By: Dr. Luis David Suárez Rodríguez
In recent years,
more and more people around the world , including Playa del Carmen , are
looking for healing options that include our whole being, not only the physical
body, but the mind and the spirit as well. This is called the holistic
approach. This approach offers a wide set of healing options that are now
increasingly available, ranging from therapeutic massage, reiki, homeopathy,
herbal therapies, acupuncture, ayurvedic medicine and many others.
With so many
options and with so many proponents of natural therapies, it’s very easy to get
lost in the labyrinth of the so called, alternative or complimentary, healing
therapies. And if you happen to be sick, and are not particularly fond of
allopathic medicine (Western medicine), you might want to be sure that the
healing option you have chosen is the safest and most effective therapy to
treat your illness.
Despite the fact
that allopathic medicine lacks a holistic approach to a patient, it is the most
accurate form of approaching a health problem. The diagnostic methods and
techniques of allopathic medicine are based upon scientific, demonstrable
evidence, of the way our body works; our physiology and the way our bodily
functions are affected by disease. But when it comes to treatment options, there
are several therapies that can be used safely and effectively before allopathic
medicine, which should be reserved for severe, unresponsive or surgical cases,
a sort of last resort instead of a first line of treatment.
Knowing why and when
a complimentary therapy is indicated is the core of what has become our new
holistic paradigm: Integrative Medicine. This is how we call a medical approach
that has scientific medicine in the center, as a sound basis for establishing
the diagnosis and analyzing the case, and then integrates complimentary
medicines such as acupuncture or phytotherapy (the use of plants to treat medical conditions)to achieve the best results in the treatment of a particular patient.
Yes, in integrative medicine we treat people, not diseases. Nobody has the same
disease as their neighbor, we are all different beings with different
situations in our lives that condition the way we process the environment, how
we get sick and how we heal is always different and individual.
Integrative medicine
integrates not only the scientific with the complimentary; it also integrates
the patient’s body, mind and soul when deciding upon a particular therapy.
When we get sick it’s not only our liver or
our stomach aching, but also our mind and spirit suffering, and if we want to
cure ourselves instead of just palliating the symptoms, our whole being should
be addressed in the therapy.
