La Palette, not just eating out, but a true dining experience!

Web Guy and I were celebrating our 14th wedding anniversary so we decided to commemorate this occasion with some fancy drinks, gourmet food, and some good conversation; a true "date night". We decided on La Palette for a number of reasons; we hadn't been there before, we had met the owners Farrah and Michael and liked their personable attitudes, and we missed dining out in a style similar to many restaurants we frequented in Seattle prior to moving to Playa del Carmen. So off we went to have a date night at La Palette....

 


La Palette opened its doors in Playa del Carmen in November 2006, and it is the creative baby of Farrah Gosselin, and Michael Harrington, both originally from Toronto. Combined they have over 32 years of restaurant experience between them, and they had a similarly styled restaurant in Toronto prior to opening La Palette here in Playa del Carmen. Michael is the chef and he runs the kitchen creating the recipes and concepts for the restaurant. He started in the industry at only 14 years old, and had his first restaurant by the time he was 24. He has worked with world renowned chefs, and worked in the kitchen at the Hilton Hotel in Berlin, as well as completing culinary school in Toronto. Farrah started her career in the industry at the ripe old age of 16, and she has focused her talents on the "front of the house" so to speak running the floor, handling the management, and utilizing her exceptional bar tending talents as well.

Dining at La Palette in Playa del Carmen We arrived around 7:30 and were immediately greeted and seated by Farrah offering us the wine and dinner menu, and bringing a trio of petite breads and homemade herbed garlic butter to our table while we perused the menus. We both decided on a specialty martini a la Farrah and were not disappointed. Web Guy went for the Naked Martini; a traditional gin martini straight up with 3 olives, and although the price tag packed a punch at $90.00 pesos it was worth every drop. I on the other hand went for more of a girly drink, the Soho Martini ($120.00 pesos); top shelf vodka, lychee liqueur, Blue Curacao, blackberry, and a whisper of lemonade, and it was good to the last drop!

We decided to stick with hors devours, and tapas so we could try different tastes and styles, and we started with the Trio de Mar ($90.00 pesos); smoked trout mousse with crispy garlic chips, Terrine of crab and scallion on herbed crepe frite, and grilled calamari with basil cream, and caviar. Although all were tasty the trout mouse was by far my favorite.

Have a martini at La Palette in Playa del Carmen They recently added a new concept of a tapas menu where you can choose 6 pieces for $100.00 pesos so we went that route and were happy with our choice. There are 6 tapas on the menu and are changed frequently, but the night we were there the options were; spiced black bean chili, hosin tuna tartar, braised beef with St. Andre cheese, stuffed cherry tomato with toasted almond, and roasted garlic basil pesto, deep fried shrimp lime cake, and seared fois gras ($50.00 pesos additional). We decided not to go with the fois gras and doubled up on the tuna tartar, and it was amazing. Being a seafood nut the tuna and the fried shrimp lime cake were among my favorites where as the chili and braised beef did not make my taste buds dance. To finish off our experience we sipped a glass of champagne and shared a warm chocolate cake with hazelnut ice cream that made me want to lick the plate. All and all it was a great dining experience that we luxuriated over for more then 2 hours! The service was impeccable, the atmosphere was warm and romantic, and the food was delicious. Although some may say that the prices are high; I would agree, but you certainly get what you pay for. This is not a place to grab a cheap bite, but rather a culinary experience that you would be hard pressed to find somewhere else in Playa del Carmen.

Absolutely loved the food, and the service was impeccable! We went for hors devours, and drinks, but will certainly return soon for a meal. Farrah and Michael are doing a great job!

Welcome to Playa Del Carmen! The most romantic destination.
Not just beautiful beaches, people and restaurants, but exotic past life styles.
My husband and I are from all over the states and from Italy. We just want to quickly say that we were in Playa and being French/Italian the best over all restaurant and time of our trip was dining at La Palette Restaurant. The food was unbelievable, service amazing and just everything perfect, wines, music surrounding. Loved it tooo much. If hotels or companies need to impress the clients, thats the place to go.

this place is a hidden gem......so cosy....so elegant and quiet. A real change from the 5th avenue tourist trap. We stumbled upon it walking to the beach and went back for dinner one night.... and have been back for dinner every week for 2 months.
Every time we go we are pampered with the service and blown away by the food. There is really nothing like it here in playa. It compares to New York, San Francisco and Chicago and any other city that has a real culinary niche.
The food is French fusion, with the typical French flare with Duck confit, Steak Frites, Escargot, Foie Gras and Pate but also everyday specials like Ostrich fillet, New Zealand Lamb rack, rabbit , mussels and many many more. The sauces and just as tasty but are lightened up considering the heat.
The desserts are out of this world....try the flourless,whiskey, espresso chocolate cake, to dye for or the creme brulee.
This place is revolutionising the way we, here in Playa, eat. Super creative and innovative. A real treat for any day of the week.
Check out the wine list, made up of wines not found anywhere else in playa, predominantly French but is composed of new world wines from all over the world. Small but meticulous.

Definetly a must!!!!!!!

My wife and I along with another couple just returned from Playa Del Carmen. We had heard that the chef/owner from La Palette restaurant in Toronto had moved and opened a new La Palette in Playa and were very anxious to visit it. Michael Harrington with his fiancee Farrah have created a beautiful restaurant in Mexico...it is so charming and such a cosy and friendly atmosphere....a true break from all the Mexican and mediocre food. All the food from the Foie Gras to the Steak Frites and right down to the desserts was exceptional. I cannot wait to go back and again experience such a culinary treat.
