What to do and where to go on Halloween, and Day of the Dead, in Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya. The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is an ancient Aztec celebration of the memory of our ancestors that have passed onto the spiritual world. It is celebrated on November 1st, All Saints' Day, and November 2nd, All Souls' Day. The holiday is especially popular here in Mexico where it is a national holiday, but it is also celebrated in the Philippines, and to some extent in other Latin American countries. Brazil celebrates Dia de los Muertos as a public holiday where many Brazilians celebrate it by visiting cemeteries and churches, bringing flowers, lighting candles and praying.
Halloween is a tradition celebrated on the night of October 31, and although many people view it as a holiday for children to dress up and go trick or treating; it has become very popular among adults as well. It is the one time of year that it isn’t looked down upon for adults to play dress up and let their inner child get out and have some serious crazy fun. It is most commonly celebrated in the United States, Canada, the UK, Ireland, and Puerto Rico, but more and more countries each year embrace this now Westernized tradition. Halloween originated among the Celts in Ireland, Britain and France, and was a Pagan Celtic harvest festival, but various renditions and versions of these traditions were brought to North America in the 19th century.
Because we live in such an international community both Dia de los Muertos and Halloween are celebrated in The Riviera Maya. So check out the activities and festivals below and you will certainly get the best of both worlds as we have parties, parties, and more parties to embrace, and celebrate, our cultural diversity. Although it may seem a sad thing to celebrate, even morbid to some, Dia de los Muertos is celebrated joyfully. Though it occurs at the same time as Halloween, All Saints' Day and All Souls Day, the traditional mood is upbeat and festive with an emphasis on celebrating and honoring the lives of the deceased. It is a celebration of the continuation of life; the belief is not that death is the end, but rather the beginning of a new stage in life.
