Educentro: A New Educational Program for Puerto Aventuras and Akumal PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 13 January 2005

Educentro is a new non-profit educational program for both children and adults in Puerto Aventuras and Akumal.

The program started almost 8 years ago, and was a simple bare bones English program that was offered in Poblado Puerto Aventuras. Educentro is a new program that has encompassed and fused two existing programs, Friends of Puerto Aventuras (FOPA), and Puerto Aventuras and Akumal Education (PAEE). They both had similar missions, but different driving forces behind each of them, and they have now decided to join the same team.......

The main mission for this incredible program is to provide a variety of educational programs while fostering a strong sense of community. It is now a full fledged program and includes all of the following classes and services:

  • Adult English in both Puerto Aventuras and Akumal
  • Computer Training
  • Electrician training
  • Computer Club
  • Job Listing bulletin board
  • Library for children to adults
  • Community Events Board
  • Family Counseling
  • Community Bazaar (bi-annually)
  • Children’s’ English (ages 6 to 15)

The majority of children’s programs follow a school year schedule (broken into 3 parts), and the adult education classes run for 2 months at a time. The program is non-profit and volunteer based and they now have a staff of 8 people. Confederación Revolucionaria de Obreros y Campesinos (CROC) has donated the use of the building, and the program is offered free of charge to all locals. In order to encourage attendance and participation it is required that each student put down a deposit, and they get a full refund once they complete the course. In addition there is a scholarship program offered to children entering Preparetoria. Because there is not an existing public school program for children from the ages of 15 to 18, scholarships are offered to these children to come and attend local area schools in Playa del Carmen.

The communities of both Akumal and Puerto Aventuras have pulled together and are making a difference to hundreds of people in the outlying Poblados, currently there are students from over 7 states in Mexico! So if you are interested in donating your time, money or materials, you too can make a difference as more and more programs are able to be added to this incredible community program.
