Colegio Ingles – Educational Excellence in the Riviera Maya

So they say great achievements are born from great opportunity. If that is true, it looks like we have greatness upon us at the Colegio Ingles, the brand new campus for young people on the Careterra Federal in Playa del Carmen.

You see back in 1998, Colegio Ingles was just a dream for a single mother who just wanted a wonderful education for her child.

Working in Cancun running a long distance service firm, Eugenia Guzman began to obtain many clients in Playa del Carmen. As she acquired more and more, she found herself spending more time in Playa and it grew on her. She wanted to live in Playa.

Because Playa was in the infant stages of growth, the school options were extremely limited and thus moving to Playa would be a challenge for those who wanted to move here to participate in the growth on this young community.

Being that necessity is the mother of invention and that Eugenia has a young child and desired to make Playa del Carmen her home, well let’s just say the entrepreneurial spirit arose and Eugenia went to work making it happen.

Being originally from Mexico City, Eugenia set about obtaining investors and before she knew it, the Colegio was borne! Using careful planning, attention to detail, and setting up a modern curriculum that met the needs of the community, the Colegio’s foundation was set for success.

Now, at Colegio Ingles, the curriculum is 50% in Spanish and 50% in English. “Our community and economy here in Playa is very unique and demands that our children be fluent in both languages” says Eugenia.

Because English is the language of world business, we are meeting the challenge for our children. In addition to focusing on English, we offer focused programs in sports, self-discipline, self-esteem building, and strong moral values.

We currently employ 18 teachers and next year will double our staff as we add grades 7^th to 12^th. Our classes have a maximum of 25 students per classroom.

To get in the school, we interview each parent and student. Our standards are demanding and we insure that each student has a chance to succeed in such an environment.

“We have students from all over Mexico, the U.S.A, Canada, and Europe. We are all learning together in a multicultural atmosphere. It is truly exciting” says Eugenia.

“The school year starts in last week of August and ends early in July. We do have time off for holidays and special occasions. Our aim is to be the premier school in the Riviera Maya” says a proud Eugenia.

The Colegio has a goal of giving the students a cut above education - a “different breed” so to speak.. We want the kids to be very secure with themselves, smart, respectful, and learn how to act upon their words” says Eugenia. “We know that when kids move on from the school they will have very strong values and a platform to live in the world and that is exactly what desire. It’s all about high achievement. She wants kids to leave the Colegio with the knowledge that they can attend any college or university in the world.” Says Eugenia.

To add and build, the school is currently adding a soccer field, basketball courts, track and field area, and a 3^rd floor of classrooms. A new library is currently planned for the 2^nd floor.

Our vision calls for 4 classrooms for each grade consisting of 25 kids each classroom. We expect to have a new building for the middle and high school students. In the future, we plan on starting up a new school in another area of a growing population where the kids need a bigger and better school eg….Tulum or Cozumel.
