Ak Lu'um International School slated to start building a new facility for the 2007-2008 school year. Ak Lu’um International School is beginning to build its permanent site, which will be inaugurated in August 2007. The school grounds, measuring 10,000m2 are 800 meters west of the Playa – Tulum road, just after El Palomar and before the Xcaret turnoff.
The arquitectural project makes full use of natural, self-sustaining materials such as bamboo, stone and palm leaves to create an eco friendly school, which will run on solar and air power exclusively. Provisions are being made for non-polluting sewage and garbage disposal and recycling. Ak Lu’um will extend from preschool to grade 4 next year. The classrooms are designed to be ample, airy and light and the buildings themselves weave in and out of the jungle, totally in sync with the surroundings. A large library, observation tower, kitchen, art studio, turtle pond and chicken coop will also provide meaningful learning opportunities for the students. The pool is projected to be semi-Olympic and non-chlorinated to avoid damaging the water table. In February there will be a parent (and future parent) gathering to give further details and answer questions, the scale model of our new school will also be on display. We’ll keep you posted!
