The sand was flying, the sun was warming our bodies and the drinks were chilling, more sand was flying ....... life in paradise! Even though I've been living in Cozumel for 2 years, I rarely get the chance to do any "touristy" things. So, when I got the opportunity to go on a Jeep tour with Pelicanos, I jumped at the chance. My sister was in town for the weekend, so I was looking for ways to entertain her; the Jeep tour defiantly fit the bill! Editors note on Picture: We are not really sure the jeeps looked like this as our reporter did not send a picture of them – but she did get lots of pictures of the tour guides! Pelicanos Tours offer Jeep, dune buggy, and bicycle tours, and cater to the cruise ship clientele. We met up with our group at the International Pier; here we were introduced to our handsome tour guides and briefed on our plans for the day. We were told that the tour would be extremely OFF-ROAD and that anyone with back problems, pregnant women, and very young children are advised not to go ...........
After our short stop we continued our journey to the other side where we were to see Mayan ruins and hang out on the beach. Once we went off road and hit the sand we found out what they meant about a 'bumpy ride'. It was very rough; one vehicle even got stuck in the sand.
The beach portion of our tour was great! An hour of relaxing on a secluded, breath-taking beach with a Mexican feast to boot! Unfortunately, although it was a sunny day; the water was very rough and our guides would not allow us to venture out past about waist level into the water. As one guide explained, "This is the windward side of the island and the currents are very strong. We were out late last night so we would rather relax and not be saving lives today, ok?" After we enjoyed our day in the sun, we returned to the PeePee Station to make our final purchases before heading home. The ride was definitely adventurous, the food was good, the beach was gorgeous, and our guides were charming and entertaining. All-in-all our Pelicanos Jeep Tour was a great way to spend the day. Gracias Danny and Nian! Challis lives in Cozumel and works at Cozumel Living Real Estate.
