Cozumel's seafront is getting a facelift and there is a February 12th deadline!

With only weeks to go, the pressure is on to finish Cozumel’s new seafront in time for this year’s Carnival. The island’s Municipal Government, responsible for the works, insist resurfacing of the 1.3 mile (2 km) stretch will be finished by 7 February so that the first processions can pass along the seafront on February 12th, 2005.

Ricardo Espinosa Freyre, Public Works Director at the Municipal Government, reassured that the newly surfaced malecon will be cleared in time for the festivities to begin. However, he explained, planting the new garden spaces along the street will wait until after Carnival to avoid damage during the event.

The project to give Cozumel’s seafront a major facelift was started in early 2004. The main section north of the Ferry Pier has already been revealed with an attractive new design using the island’s emblem, the swallow. The section south is also taking shape now.

The primary objective of the changes is to make it easier for pedestrians, including many thousands of cruise ship passengers, to walk along the sidewalks. All cables now run underground and posts and other sidewalk obstacles are being removed.

How it looked in 2004. The carriageways remain the same width and the palm trees in the center are preserved, but the sidewalks have been widened wherever possible. Street lighting is being improved so shops can better display their products at night and underground work includes fiber optic telecommunications cables and a new public water system.

The need for an improved seafront has been acknowledged for some 20 years, but only since the last change of government has agreement been reached on what type and at what cost.

To keep Cozumel’s new face blemish-free, a special cleaning machine will be used to regularly clean the street and remove tire marks. The machine How it will look when finished.should get its first real test the day after Carnival!
