Cozumel Scuba Repair: First Aid For Your Scuba Equipment
Monday, 07 February 2005
By Myrna Cleghorn
At a time when the Island seems to be submerged in the stupor of siesta, a tourist from Ontario, Canada walks into Cozumel Scuba Repair. “Can somebody take a look at this regulator?
Both the regulator and the octopus started leaking at the same time,” he says with a tone of despair. While Javier Polanco, Cozumel Scuba Repair’s manager, tests the regulator, I look around the store. The walls are sprinkled with certificates of achievement for Scuba Repair Clinics from various brands, such as Mares, Dacor, Scubapro and Cressi-Sub. There is also a collection of old regulators and rebreathers and photos of the undersea –a silent tribute to the evolution of Scuba diving and man’s imperious need to conquer the unknown.
It is February, which means lots of activity here in Cozumel! Valentine's Day is this month, and what says 'I love you' more than an island get-away?
Carnaval (Mardi Gras) starts on the 9th, and ends with the final day of the parade on the 16th. Because of local elections and no drinking laws, city officials -much to the disliking of the church-, have moved it back a week. We hope the new streets are ready in time!

Alejandro Vales, director of the airport, said the airport’s maximum capacity is still “far from being reached” and that with proper adaptations the numbers can be increased further.
By: Amber HightowerPicture your dream home;Start with an island in the Mexican Caribbean
Next, add a spacious, impeccably crafted home in a gated community with state of the art appliances, ceramic tiled floors, exquisitely tiled bathrooms, vaulted ceilings, and an Infinity pool with cascading falls. All of this nestled in a lush tropical Eden, and then you open your front door and step out onto 400 feet of private white sandy beach where one of the world's most spectacular coral reefs awaits beneath the crystalline sea lapping at the shore.
As long as we're dreaming, let's throw in a 135-foot pier off the beach where you have arranged for your dive boat to pick you up, an architecturally landscaped garden of indigenous plants, some of which leave the scent of honey lingering in the ocean breezes, and 24-hour security.
Now what if I told you this is not a dream? ..
This is the first of a series that will introduce you to some of our wonderful Cozumel locals
Meet Rita and Sava
In 1974, Rita Sheese traded bitter Chicago winters for a rich and exciting life in Cozumel and has since become as much a part of Cozumel as the island’s signature sunsets. Rita began her adventure as a dive instructor on the island, running her own dive operation for three years.
The dance clubs in Cozumel can be a blast, but there may come a time, when you have had enough of the mind numbing thump, thump, thump of the beat, drinks with names like the Brain Extinguisher, and the nauseating flashing of strobe lights.
When it does, may I suggest a beer and some good ol’ live rock n’ roll at the Hard Rock Café?"
Warning: The band, Nectar, is not for the faint of heart who are easily intimated by excellent, heart-pounding, hard hitting, LOUD, live rock music.
