As everyone knows Cozumel got hit pretty hard last October when Hurricane Wilma came blowing through the Riviera Maya.
Yet visitors to the island today would hardly know a storm had passed. The reconstruction effort on the ‘Island of Swallows’ has been impressive to say the least. Just six months after Wilma vacationed in the Riviera Maya, Cozumel was already 99 per cent recovered. Now, downtown shops and businesses have been open for many months, all bar a couple of the big hotels and resorts are refurbished and open again and tons of soft white sand have been brought in to top up the beaches that were hit the hardest.
There is nothing like flying over the waves in Cozumel...
Cozumel takes its name from the Mayan cuzamil -
meaning Land of the Swallows - due to the birds frequenting the island.
But now there is a different type of graceful bird in the sky overhead.
Kites. Huge, nine to twenty meter multi-color kites. The island’s
“blue Jell-O” water and variety of conditions make it an ideal spot for
practicing the fast-growing sport of kiteboarding.

Online Historical Record of Hurricane Emily
A local photographer and website designer is looking for your best photos of Hurricane Emily. Ian Campbell, currently in Cozumel, is looking for pictures to publish on his new (and free) website http://www.huracan-emily.com/. He will add more pictures to those he has already taken in order to create a complete online historical record of the hurricane’s passage through the Yucatan Peninsula.
