New 50 peso bill in Mexico New 50 Peso Bill

The Bank of Mexico issued a new style 50 peso bill this month.

Like the 20 peso bill, the new 50 peso bank note is printed on resistant polymer instead of paper and has extra security features. The Bank said that polymer is more durable and picks up less dirt than paper, so it is more hygienic too. The front of the bill still features an image of José María Morelos y Pavon, a liberal priest who was leader of the Mexican independence movement against the Spanish from 1811 to 1815.

Investment in infrastructure and tourism in Cozumel Huge Investment in Infrastructure and Tourism

Cozumel's Municipal Government announced last week that it plans to spend 350 million pesos (US $33 million) on public works in 2007. Ricardo Espinosa Freyre, Director of Public Works, said they hoped to maintain the same high level of investment as seen this year. In 2006, a little over 350 million pesos has been spent on public works and infrastructure, almost 3 times as much as in 2005, said Mr Espinosa.

Amongst the major public works projects completed recently in Cozumel was the new airport road, with improved drainage designed to prevent flooding in low lying areas. Mexican President, Vicente Fox Quesada, officially inaugurated the spiffy new avenue when he visited the island earlier in the year.

Separate from this news, Mexican news website Noticaribe also reported last week that the State Port Authority plans to spend 40 million pesos (US $3.8 million) on improvements to Cozumel's piers and port in 2007 and that the State Tourism Department is putting US $1 million into promoting Cancun, the Riviera Maya and Cozumel.

New Comercial Mega proposed for Cozumel

New Hyperstore Proposed

Mexican supermarket giant, Comercial Mexicana, wants to build a new commercial center in downtown Cozumel, said the island's Municipal Government last week. The hyperstore would be located on land by the corner of 11th Street with the seafront.

The federal electricity plant is currently located on that land and the municipality said that various other ideas were also discussed with the company at an urban planning group meeting. Comercial Mexicana will now analyze their options and return to the next meeting, said the authority.

Comercial Mexicana operates stores similar to Wal-Mart in the United States or Carrefour in France. Its parent company is CCM, a Mexican retail group part-owned by CostCo.
