Hurricane Dean passed by about 130 miles (210 km) to the south of Cozumel last night, bringing rain and wind to the island but with minimal effects. Locals in Cozumel estimate that wind speeds were not much higher than 60 miles per hour (100kmh). There has been no interruption to power, the downtown seafront looks just as it did yesterday and there is virtually no damage to buildings or other infrastructure. Tom Fryer, owner of the Hotel Flamingo, said that downtown would "probably be back to normal tomorrow". With minimal clean-up being required, tourists will be able to resume their vacations almost immediately. The category 5 storm made landfall near Mahajual on the coast of Mexico around 2.30am local time, said the National Hurricane Center in the United States. Although the intensity of the storm has dropped now it is over land, other parts of the country continue to be on alert as the storm crosses the Yucatan Peninsula and moves towards the Gulf of Mexico. A quick update from the Consular's office in Cozumel. According to local authorities on Cozumel Island, both passenger ferries will start running Wednesday, August 22nd at 6 AM and both plan to have a regular day's schedule from then on. The cargo/car ferry will start operating on Friday, August 24th. Typical of the generous people of Cozumel, even though they have just had a week of 20 hour work days getting everything ready for Hurricane Dean, they are already going full force in raising goods and donations to send over those affected in Costa Maya. You have got to love these people ! They are asking for donations of clean, useable clothing, milk in cartons, cooking oil , small bottles of water, and canned goods. If you can help with this effort, please see Daly Negron at the Convention Center where the goods are being organized for delivery. Most everyone in Cozumel has light back, and most never even lost power. CAPA is checking their equipment for any problems from the power loss then they will start full water service again.
