 Chakanaab Lagoon in Cozumel

As everyone knows Cozumel got hit pretty hard last October when Hurricane Wilma came blowing through the Riviera Maya.

Yet visitors to the island today would hardly know a storm had passed. The reconstruction effort on the ‘Island of Swallows’ has been impressive to say the least. Just six months after Wilma vacationed in the Riviera Maya, Cozumel was already 99 per cent recovered. Now, downtown shops and businesses have been open for many months, all bar a couple of the big hotels and resorts are refurbished and open again and tons of soft white sand have been brought in to top up the beaches that were hit the hardest.

All in all, Cozumel is in fantastic shape.

Recently, one of the island’s most popular attractions also re-opened – Chankanaab Park. Visitors can now access the main entrance area, lagoon and beach. Park officials estimated that 75,000 plants were damaged or destroyed in last year's storm and the biggest challenge has been replanting them. Hundreds of workers have been repairing the attraction and returning visitors are impressed by the transformation.

Entrance, at the moment, is 2 for 1, so 2 adults pay $16 ($8 each) to get in. Children also pay $8. If you are just looking for a beach club you may want to consider one of the free beaches to the south, such as Paradise Beach or Palancar. However, if you're looking for something with a bit more to offer and want to support one of Cozumel's natural wonders, Chankanaab Park is well worth a visit.

Vacationers to the island today comment on the friendly locals and lack of crowds and many say their vacations are even better than before. Whether visiting Cozumel on a vacation or cruise, or making a ferry trip over from the mainland, there has never been a better time to visit Mexico’s Caribbean Island jewel.
