Cocos Cozumel By:Myrna Cleghorn

The stream of customers at Cocos Cozumel restaurant has been steady since 6:00am.

When I walk in the air feels electric.  I am welcomed with loud hellos, hugs and kisses.  The scene resembles a soldier’s homecoming and it is to be repeated many more times during this morning.

Cocos Cozumel, a family owned breakfast restaurant just off Cozumel’s main plaza, has reopened its doors after a two-month-low-season-hiatus ...

Scattered like shipwrecks for those two months, the regular all too-familiar faces, are now anchored in their places at the bar.  The usual bantering and sometimes aimless conversation resumes after I settle, giving me that warm feeling of being at home in a foreign land.

Behind the counter, owners, Terri and Daniel Ocejo, (pictured to the right) go about the business of the day filling out orders and tending the cash register.  Both participate in the conversation without losing track of it or what they are doing.

Daniel goes in and out of the bar to welcome customers as they come in. Manuel and Julio, Cocos’ lifetime waiters, work diligently delivering mouth-watering orders of Eggs Mexicana –scrambled eggs with tomato, onion and jalapeno pepper, Enfrijolada –tortilla with scrambled eggs folded over, smothered with black bean sauce and cream on top, Eggs Cocos –fried eggs over toast laced with a creamy white sauce and chopped ham…yummy!

Cocos Cozumel has been successful since it opened, fifteen years ago, on May 1st –Mexico’s Dia del Trabajo. Labor Day –how appropriate as they have worked hard since to keep the quality of food and experience they deliver on a daily basis.  Their first customers were from Anchorage, Alaska.  These days, both local and foreign customers patronize the place regularly.

“Cocos is not about fast food.  Everything on the menu is prepared fresh and from scratch,” says Daniel.  “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and we take pride in making it right,” he concludes.  Affordable too –the average cost for any item on the menu is $50 pesos.

“Why the name?” I ask.  “We wanted a name that meant something in Spanish, sounded tropical, was easy to pronounce in English and easy to remember,” Terri answers.  It is a catchy name too.  And so is their food.

A warning on their business card reads: Caution -We must warn you that past experience has shown that after just one breakfast at Cocos, most people feel compelled to return every day of their vacation! I know –I have been coming to Cocos for ten years. Why? Because Cocos is much more than just breakfast.

Try Cocos for yourself. You’ll come back for more.  It is a promise, not a warning!
