Description
Dine in a unique restaurant-bar within a real tropical jungle setting with the sound of a trickling fountain and a small brook running past your feet. It doesn’t get better than this. This is exactly the way one would picture Paradise. This gentle and relaxing ambiance can be found right in Playa del Carmen at "La Cueva del Chango" (translation: the monkey cave). You will find it close to the newest part of 5th Avenue. They are now open for dinner in the evening with New Natural Mexican cuisine; unique, simple, fresh and delicious. The ambiance becomes even more delightful in the evening with lights softly glowing in the jungle.
In case you want to order something which is not in the menu, or served different, they will gladly accommodate any of your requests. The breakfast menu includes among other things; freshly squeezed juices and licuados (shakes), fruit salad with yogurt and granola (home made), oatmeal, french toast and a great variety of eggs and omelets. Plus great croissants and chocolate rolls.
The lunch menu includes a variety of mexican food and exotic salads like; Ensalada Azul (lettuce, spinach, pecans, apples, orange, and broccoli all covered in a blue You can end your meal with chocolate or "cajeta" crepes; but I recommend you try the chocolate mousse pie for dessert (if they have any left). It is sinfully decadent and just like eating the richest, creamiest truffles. Everything is fresh. The breads are whole grain and delicious. The tortillas are home made (you must taste the difference). The owners Andres Friederich and Pedro Gomez pride themselves on the fact they provide healthy, high quality food prepared in a unique way and served in a unique setting. Try it and you’ll come back; just like any of the locals who frequent La Cueva del Chango.

Mexican wines, fresh juices, beers and liquor will complement such plates like "Xcatic" chiles stuffed with shrimps marinated in soya and citrus fruits; "panela" cheese baked with olive oil and oregano; "habanero" chile cream soup, shrimps breaded with cinnamon and "xcatic" chile, served with fresh apple puree or the chicken breast with fresh peanut sauce. Some items are spicy; some are not, so there is something for everybody. (picture above: happy patrons enjoying the garden)
cheese dressing); Ensalada Mexicana (lettuce, chaya, jicama, tomato, avocado, corn, cheese, and turkey ham graced with a cilantro dressing, then covered with fresh made tortilla strips), or try a salad with delicious, tender chicken satays grilled and served with perfectly spiced peanut sauce. You can also choose from crepes, sandwiches, empanadas and other savory mexican treats.
La Cueva del Chango is located on 38th St. between 5th Ave. and the ocean (close to Alltournative and the Shangri-La Hotel). They are open Monday to Saturday from 08:00 till 23:00 hours. Sundays from 08:00 till 14:00 hours. (sorry, no credit cards accepted).
