Cheap Eats More bang for your buck at the Burrito Brothers in Playa del Carmen. Recently a large group of us wanted to get together for dinner out, but we didn't want to break the bank so we decided to try a new restaurant, the Burrito Brothers, in Playa del Carmen. We went in earlier in the day to let them know there would be between 10 and 15 people around 7 for dinner and they were delighted!

by Joe Bevacqua, The Frugal Gourmet: Il Baretto - Paradise Fresh from the Mediterranean - A Playa del Carmen Delight! Perfect! Upscale! Amore! IL BARETTO has the perfect location, in the upscale part of 5th Ave, at the corner of calle 26 in Playa del Carmen - where most of the Italian crowd gathers. IL BARETTO is the number one meeting place with its unbeatable ambience due to Barbara’s charismatic presence, and the consistency of its food quality. Her partner Clo and the attentive and friendly staff make you feel at home, and they even know how you like your Cappuccino.! If you care to snack on a Panini, or a Bruschetta or feast on a "Ravioli Quatro Fromagii" IL BARETTO is the place! The uniqueness of its PASTA menu enables the frugal gourmet to be able to choose between different pastas and sauces at a penny-wise 55 pesos! A rarity in town!

By Joe Bevacqua The Frugal Gourmet: The Pummarola The Best Bread This Side of Hoboken One says that some of the best discoveries are off the beaten track is The Pummarola restaurant. The Pummarola means “Tomato” in the Napolitano dialect. It is located between the Shangri-La, and the Reef Coco Beach hotels on a dirt track called Flamingo Road which is one block from the beach nested between condominiums. It is a true find. The brick oven Pizza - Pure Napolitano Style, served on an individual board, is a meal in itself..... Beyond the many varieties, the Margarita which is classic, simple and mouth watering, is my favorite.

By: Joe Bevacqua The Frugal Gourmet: EL ASADOR DE MANOLO Manolo is well known in the booming Restaurant industry of Playa Del Carmen. He launched “Buenos Aires” as well as “Sur” the renowned steak house restaurant on Quinta Avenida. He recently opened El ASADOR DE MANOLO, on 10th Ave between 24 y 26 Street. El ASADOR Specializes in “Parilla Argentina” which is an Argentinean Grill serving fine cuts of meat, with the authentic chimichurry sauce; a medley of spices where parsley, rosemary, oregano and the chef’s secret ingredient marinate in extra virgin olive oil. As soon as the restaurant featured its home cooking Lunch special “comida casera”, and advertised its menu on the board on the sidewalk at an astonishing 45.00 Pesos the Frugal Gourmet’s car came to a screeching halt. The sign read: “Sopa del Dia, Cannellones/Brochettas, agua de frutas - This lunch menu is served from 1:00 to 5:00PM! By hook or by crook it was time to eat!

Dive Shop Turned Tapas and Wine Bar? Only in Playa del Carmen! Known locally as Pepe Loco, Pepe Esteban came from Mexico City 11 years ago. All he knew was diving, and that is all he did, so it seemed appropriate that he open a dive shop. So Playa Dive Center came to fruition, but all good things come to an end to make way for better things, and Pepe decided to try his hand at the restaurant business.

With their tag line reading “Bar and Restaurant with a Twist” Ula Gula will impress you with their original recipes and top-notch service. Although Ula Gula opened 4 years ago I hadn’t eaten there before last Friday. When a restaurant has survived the Playa del Carmen scene for more then a year there is definitely something to their concept. Argentine owned and operated, I had only ever heard great reviews, and when a friend invited me and the Web Guy out for dinner I suggested Ula Gula. We arrived and were immediately seated at a great table with a view of 5th Avenue perfect for people watching. The waiter came over with the menus’ and took our drink orders returning quickly with a tray full of perfectly poured cocktails.
