The idea was formulated by Donna Carey, a resident of Puerto Aventuras since 1998. She has been involved in the community for many years, and has worn many different hats as a business owner as well. Currently she is the co-owner of Tiramisu, an Italian restaurant, Pelican tours, a boat tour company, and she is one of the authors of The Hammock Sutra Calendar, a calendar made in the spirit of making love in a hammock..... Although all of these projects take up the majority of her time, she felt that women are a tremendous harmonizing force, and with a little focus they could bring harmony and beauty to the community. So that is when she decided to start a community organization to bring local women together to balance the energy, and to create some positive changes locally. Their first mission has been to create a safe passage for the workers crossing the freeway from the poblado into the hotel and development area of Puerto Aventuras. More then 1,000 workers, both men and women, cross the freeway everyday to work in Puerto Aventuras. There have been over 16 deaths, and countless injuries, due to the fact that there is not a tope, light, or cross walk to slow down passing vehicles. Because Puerto Aventuras is not considered its own city, the freeway is federal jurisdiction, so local development is not allowed. GWAPAS have been fighting this uphill battle for the past couple of months, and although no changes have been made yet, they are not that easily discouraged. Due to the recent local and state elections they hope their voices will be heard to help rectify this growing problem. GWAPAS has also set up what they refer to as a “Cross Cultural Exchange.” Three times a week, at the Colegio de Puerto Aventuras library, the now 30 member group, comes for meetings and discussions. They split the meetings in both English and Spanish so that different cultures and languages can be learned from each other. Their hope is to encourage more Mexican Nationals to participate, and eventually they wish to hold their meetings in the poblado as well. GWAPAS recently hosted an independent film premiere, called Indigo. This film celebrated the fact that children can both accept change more readily then adults, and they are incredible leaders as well. GWAPAS feels that there needs to be more of a spiritual element in the Riviera Maya, as well as a celebration of children and their abilities. The concept behind the acronym is to create a way to connect women, and have them share leadership. Each individual woman is responsible for the group, and they all have a hand in creating it without any set hierarchy. The idea is to connect, harmonize, and unify the women of the Riviera Maya, and from the looks of things they are on their way!
