Recycle in Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya

Drop your recyclables off in Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, and Tulum.

We receive many e-mails asking the question; where can we recycle in Playa del Carmen? Until recently there haven't been many options besides putting your aluminum separate from your daily trash for people to pick up and return for small sums of money, or collect beer bottles to return to the "beer factory".

But thank you to local companies such as Biostandard , GVI , and municipal governments things are changing slowly but surely. Biostandard organizes responsible collection of toxic household items, and electronics, and they have started a couple of fledgling plastics recycling drop offs, which will eventually be full service recycling centers. GVI helped local government open the first plastic recycling center in Tulum, and local Playa del Carmen officials have organized a recycling drive for this coming Friday, August 3rd.

Bring your plastics, aluminum, glass bottles, paper, cardboard, old electronics, household toxins, and batteries to the following drop off points this Friday August 3rd.

Playa del Carmen: Located inside the municipal court yard between 8th and 10th Streets, and 20th Avenue from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM

Puerto Avenutras: Kiosko del Fraccionamiento between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM

Akumal: CEA between 9:00 and 1:00 PM

Tulum: Casa de la Cultura between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM

So come on out and bring your recyclables and help us keep the beautiful Riviera Maya clean!

This recycling program in Yucatán is wonderful! I am working on a recycling program for Puerto Vallarta. This will be a city-wide program. I would love any information or ideas anyone has on recycling programs in Latin America, plans, obstacles, contacts... One question: Why was this particular recycling project held on only one day?

Thanks for being the Change!
