When Andy and Jen MacDonald first came on vacation to Playa
del Carmen years ago, they never imagined that they would end up running a pet shelter here.
Originally from England, Andy and Jen moved here about a year and a half ago after falling in love with the area (we haven’t heard that one before!). They ended up owning a small restaurant, but as things also happen in Playa del Carmen, they were enrolled in their own school of hard knocks and the restaurant closed its doors in the fall of 2006.
Called the Peanut Pet Shelter, after a beloved pet, they currently have over 30 dogs, both adults and puppies, and are now taking in more kittens and cats as well. Andy and Jen are committed to finding quality caring homes for each pet, and they have re-homed over 40 animals since they opened in June 2007. With both government, and volunteer support, they are only getting more organized and well known in the community, which is really making an impact. They are in the process of becoming a licensed non-profit, and have hopes of expanding their facility and services in the months and years to come.

When Andy and Jen MacDonald first came on vacation to Playa
del Carmen years ago, they never imagined that they would end up running a pet shelter here.
As tourists, and huge animal lovers, they would often
scout outside the more heavily trafficked tourist areas, and go off the beaten
path. As many of you already know that once you are outside of the tourist
zones, there is a litany of sick and abandoned dogs and cats that are in
desperate need of love and medical care.
They would fantasize and say to themselves; "if we ever get rich we will
open an animal shelter...." While still not rich, their idea did come to fruition
only a few months ago, and they are now the only no-kill animal shelter in
Playa del Carmen.
They run solely on donations and sponsorship of
animals .So if you are interested in taking home a special Playa del Carmen pooch,
would like to volunteer your time, or
would like to become a monthly sponsor to a specific animal please visit their
