Moises returns home with a new face, and new outlook.
He sat in a Lansing
doctor's exam chair, surrounded by smiling people he could barely speak to, in
yet another of many moments far from home. Moises Chiquil didn't complain to them, these surgeons and
foreign nurses so happy to see him breathe freely through his aching new nose. But he wiped away a single tear - shed as much in deep
gratitude as physical pain - and tried to smile despite the numbness. Estoy feliz," he said with obvious joy. "I feel
like a different person." The 21-year-old is now back in Mexico,
recovering from the Sparrow
Hospital surgery that
repaired a rare facial birth defect, carrying the kindness that also healed
invisible wounds.

Centro Ecologico Akumal Truly Making a Difference.
Tuesday, 24 October 2006
A brief history of
how Cento Ecologico Akumal (CEA) came to be.
CEA was created with a generous donation of land
and buildings by the Akumal Club de Yates. The 33 members of the Akumal Yacht
Club have allowed CEA to grow on its own. They have involved themselves
primarily with the improvement of the property, so CEA will continue to be able
to support itself, into the future. In 1958, Don Pablo Bush
came to the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan
Peninsula by boat from Cozumel. Don Pablo was looking for sunken treasure from
the wreck of the Matanceros which is located off the DIF beach just south of
Akumal. Don Pablo made his camp at Akumal. Akumal was a camp armed against
marauding Maya looking for gold.
Moises is having quite the adventure! Thanks to Angel Notion and all of their supporters!
Moises and Dr. Ricardo Salazar and I (Lavonna)
arrived in Lancing, Michigan
on October 1st, 2006. Moises experienced his first flight .... he
said: " The take off was fea" ,meaning ugly in a literal translation,
and the landing was: “padre", which is slang for awesome. We arrived and were met by Jim and
Jill Fedawa, and their daughter Beth, where we would make our home for
the time that we were in Michigan.
Jim and his daughter Beth ( who is fluent in Spanish) were in Paamul for lunch;
while in the area to construct a new home near Puerto Morelos. Jim is a retired
GM worker and was very impressed by Moises and his condition. As he and his
daughter were leaving Paamul Jim said :
" I’d sure like to help that young man" but the obvious
question was how?
Bikini's, beers, burgers, and babes; how could you go wrong with that combination?
It was a blast yesterday as the community came out in full force to support a charity car wash in Playa del Carmen. The tunes were cranked, the bbq was blazing, and 30 cars came through to get cleaned by the bikini clad crew. Missed it? Too bad for you, and now you will just have to live vicariously through pictures.....
Angel Notion and Moises send
out a special thanks. Thank you to our community; we are making a difference!
Angel Notion would like to thank the community for their
continued support and commitment to making positive changes in people’s lives!
They can not do it without us and appreciate the ongoing support of the
community.
The community pulls together for one of their own.
The people of Playa del Carmen came out to the Tequila Barrel Monday night to support the fundraising benefit for DJ Young who was recently injured in a scooter accident. Live music, a magician, and a full house made the evening well worth the 50 peso entrance, and everyone had a blast drinking cervezas, enjoying the show, and jamming to the tunes of Marcy Elle. Check out the pictures below!
Angel Notion and Carrie's Heart are changing lives everyday.
Moises is 22 years
old and is originally from an impoverished native Maya region. He now works for
Kalus restaurant in Paamul. Moises was
born with nose bifida, which in an
appearance-conscious society has proved to be a difficult disability to live
with. Unlike some other birth defects
which can be camouflaged, Moises’ disability is literally as plain as the nose on his face. His one-in-a-million condition cannot be fixed with the limited medical
care and resources available to Moises here in Mexico.
DJ, from DJ's Bar, needs our help; so if you are in Playa del Carmen, or are a friend from across the globe please do what you can.
Some of you may already know that DJ Young, owner of DJ's Bar, was in a serious scooter accident on September 3rd. He has suffered some pretty major injuries, but he is improving everyday. We have gotten various inquiries on his conditon, and his sister, who is here from the United States, has written a letter to all of his concerned friends and extended family. In additon, a close friend Jez, who has helped to organize his care has also written a letter giving us an update on his overall condition.......
