Not only do our local Bomberos work their tails off for our community, but they lend a helping hand to others whenever they can....... October 2005: Hurricane Stan passed through the town of Columbia in the State of Chiapas, located Southwest of Playa del Carmen approixmately 20 hours. It was not a highly publicized Hurricane, but it was the most deadly of the season; over 2000 people died. Stan passed by Playa del Carmen as a tropical storm about two weeks before Hurricane Emily arrived here. I am proud to report that our Mayor has the confidence in his Fire fighters to order 10 of the best Rescue Firefighters and 8 Volunteers from Alltournative Tours to help assist in the rescue effort. In addition to the firefighters the team from Alltournativve proved to be invaluable due to their experience and expertise in guiding and repelling. Together this team took 7 vehicles loaded with equipment, food, and medical supplies to go help in Chiapas. Our Director of the Bomberos, Alejandro Contreras Sanchez, led the team. When they arrived the Army had not yet arrived so we were the only rescue group to first show up on the scene. Our mission was to rescue victims and bring in medical supplies and food to the affected areas. The photos attached show the construction of rope high lines, bridges and stranded families. When our men returned I asked them what their best memory was(in Spanish Buena Onda). They told me of the swollen river and how they put up a high line which aided in a much more efficient rescue. They were able to move food and stranded family members across the raging waters. These were the memories that they brought home bursting with pride that their rescue efforts paid off. The state of Quintana Roo is the newest State in Mexico. Our county is the youngest county in the state, and our firefighters are the newest department in the country of Mexico. Our young Mayor has great confidence in his fire department and the support from our local businesses and public is incredible. We would like to pass on a thank you to all of the departments in the USA and Canada that have contributed equipment and training to our department! Without your generosity none of this would be possible. May you and your families have a very Merry Christmas and prosperous New year God Bless you all. With Warm Regards,
Chief Brian Borjesson
