DJ, from DJ's Bar, needs our help; so if you are in Playa del Carmen, or are a friend from across the globe please do what you can.

Some of you may already know that DJ Young, owner of DJ's Bar, was in a serious scooter accident on September 3rd. He has suffered some pretty major injuries, but he is improving everyday. We have gotten various inquiries on his conditon, and his sister, who is here from the United States, has written a letter to all of his concerned friends and extended family. In additon, a close friend Jez, who has helped to organize his care has also written a letter giving us an update on his overall condition.......

Letter from Natasha, DJ's sister:

Dear Friends of DJ and Playa del Carmen,

It is with a heavy and humble heart that I write this letter. Your friend (and my older brother) DJ has had a very serious accident. Besides 8 broken ribs, DJ has a serious head trauma (a large fracture and two contusions). Through the random phone call of a security guard and the grace of God, DJ was discovered in the hospital on Monday. Our other brother Bob called me after receiving a call from Jez. I took the next flight from Denver to Cancun on Wednesday morning.

Unfortunately, I am the only family able to come to Mexico (thanks to financial support from my close friends). Our youngest brother Lenny was recently released from the hospital (he had medicine complications). Bob is financially unable to come. Our mother is not stable and on Medicaid / Medicare herself. DJ’s father passed away when he was a boy, and his step father (my Dad) has numerous problems as well.

It is difficult to share our family troubles, but I am worried for DJ’s care. I am studying for the bar exam (law) and do not have a full time job. I humbly ask you, DJ’s friends ("friends are the family you choose") if you could help me with DJ’s medical care? I realize that times are difficult for more than simply my family. Any amount you can spare will help DJ. I am extremely appreciative for the support shown to me by DJ’s Playa family. A special Thank you to La Rana Cansada for giving me a place to stay and comfort.

My brothers Bob & Lenny and I will remain eternally grateful, with love Natasha Young, DJ’s sister.

Letter from Jez:

Dear all,
DJ’s is currently in a hospital in Cancun. He is under 24 hour supervision and has - at the request of the attending Doctors- has a friend with him around the clock. His injuries include:

  • A fractured skull, which begins at the left of his forehead, and continues to his left ear; approximately 64%.
  • Two serious contusions; one from impact on the left side of the forehead, the other on the rear right side where the brain bounced.
  • Eight broken ribs.

He is receiving various meds, with three IV's attached to his right arm. Ad his doctors are quoted as saying that he is “responding well to meds and making progress”. Initially after the accident DJ was in a coma for two days and had a severe lung infection. The lung infection is now cleared after draining via a chest tube on his leftside. The tube has now been removed. The accident occurred early am on Sunday, whilst he was returning home to Playacar on his scooter. The cause of accident is unknown, as there were no witnesses.DJ is not covered by any medical insurance, and the bills are mounting every day.If you can make a donation please do. With the entire comunity here, we are trying to raise funds via events and auctions, but it will not be enough.
