The Bomberos in Playa del Carmen

Update from the Bomberos in Playa del Carmen!

By Chief Brian Borjesson

Hola, well it’s past the time of year for my annual report., and I am sorry it is so late. I have plenty of excuses. I have a new prosthetic left knee that kept me down through the holidays. We did not do our annual Christmas toy drive, or Christmas at the fire house for our Bomberos children, which has been a tradition for 10 years; it was very tough year economically for most countries of the world.

2008 was a good year for our men; we won the state championship again, and our academy was world class. We dedicated 2 new sub stations in Playa. In October 2 more fire trucks arrived in Playa del Carmen loaded with equipment. From November through January we passed out uniforms to 7 counties in the state of Quintana Roo. We gave all fire fighters new structural turnouts (uniforms), helmets, and wild land uniforms. We also gave each department 10 to 15 fire hoses and repaired all broken hoses in each department. We have our work cut out for us this year; this administration is not as supportive as the past 4 Mayors has been.

There has been some talk about turning our Station 1 (the big station on the highway) into a school for our state fire fighters. This has been a dream of ours to complete before I retire. My wife and I have worked in this county as volunteer fire fighters since 1995 when we started a bucket brigade. We will need a lot of support to build this school, and it is so necessary to continue education in new technologies and equipment and training for all of the fire fighter’s in our state.

Our 2009 Academy will be held April 20th through the 25th. With very little support from our county this year most of our funds will come from tee-shirt sales and the THREE LEGGED RACE . My wife and I have enjoyed the generosity and support from local residents, local business and our local web pages. God bless you all and thanks for your support throughout the years. It has been my honor to serve you.

Sincerely, Chief Brian Borjesson
