Bomberos in Playa del Carmen

Sixth Annual Bomberos Academy and Fundraiser a Success!

The sixth annual Bomberos Academy wrapped up over the weekend, and it was quite a week for everyone involved. First to kick off the weeks events was the 3-legged bar hop. Teams of 2 solicited sponsors to raise funds to donate to the Bomberos in Playa del Carmen. They were then tied together and had to run to 7 different bars, Manne's Biergarten, Casa Tucan, Bad Boys, Beer Bucket, Bar Ranita, and DJ's Bar, and either have a shot or a beer. To say the least once they arrived back at Keith’s Bar on 10th Avenue everyone was in the partying mood! The next day there was a welcoming potluck at Bad Boy’s on the beach for the 13 firefighters who came down from Colorado, California, and New York to train our local company. Thank you! You guys are amazing!

Finally the training academy kicked off and this year was focused on rappelling and rescuing, as well as learning how to use new equipment that was brought down from the United States. We now have 2 “Jaws of Life” in our community which is absolutely crucial to many rescue efforts. Cancun also recently received “Jaws of Life” as well so that was the main focus for all of the companies that participated in this years academy. Saturday was the big “Iron man Competition” with each company competing against each other in timed trials as well as individual relays. Cancun, Chetumal, Cozumel, and Playa del Carmen were all involved in this year’s competition, and after winning 5 years in a row Playa del Carmen handed over the championship torch to first time winners, Cancun. Congratulations to Cancun and to all of the participants, trainers, and supporters of this year’s training academy; we appreciate everyone’s time and support in making our communities a safer place to live!!
