Remember Valerie? She was the little girl that was in desperate need of help and intervention on Cozumel. In March 2006, Valerie, and other special needs children on Cozumel, were found in atrocious conditions.

Two non-profit groups, Carrie's Heart and Angel Notion, immediately took action. So now months later we have an update on Valerie and the other children of Cozumel. Read more below for the latest from Lavonna Redman, President and Founder of Angel Notion.....

Dear Angel Notion Supporters,

Finding Valerie in the extreme condition that she was in on March 16, 2006 was a life changing experience for us.  I truly feel that we were led to her - that she was put in our path for a reason.  In that moment we had to make decision...were we just going to turn and walk away?  Or would we try to help this child?  The answer for me was clear. In a world so full of need, I truly believe that the children of The Valerie Project represent the children in most need of our support and our love. They are children that are born into this world 100% dependent on others for their every need. They are children that are born into bodies that do not allow them the freedom of movement and expression that we all take for granted. Often they are bright souls trapped in uncooperative bodies. If one takes the time to get to know them.... watching  & "listening" - they can learn the most valuable of life's lessons from these precious children.  

Caring for a child with a severe disability is a difficult,  life-long responsibility. This challenge is even greater in countries where the medical and social service systems are struggling to meet the needs of these children. The cost of adequately caring for their children is often way beyond the means of families. Families often are unable to provide for their child's basic needs.  In addition, these children's needs can not be met by the typical "adopt a child" organizations that provide assistance to children living in poverty. The monthly cost of their care far exceeds that of a non-disabled child, and in many cases, far exceeds the monthly income of the entire family. The Valerie Project will begin by supporting the basic medical, nutritional and personal care needs of the children...one child at a time.  As the project expands we hope to help more children and to move beyond basic care - beginning to truly enrich and improve the quality of each child's life.   

Valerie was brought into our life for a reason...she opened our eyes to a world of need that was beyond that which we could have imagined. The children of The Valerie Project our now being placed in each of your paths...what is your heart leading you to do?
