So it is not surprising to me that there has been some pretty elusive information being shared about the upcoming shopping center and business park, La Gran Plaza. So I decided to do a bit of investigating to see if I could get the low down, the skinny, the dirt, the inside scoop about this monster mall coming to a jungle near you.
La Gran Plaza will be located on the other side of the freeway opposite the Nissan dealership in Playa del Carmen. This 63 Hectare megaplex is slated to open in August of 2006. There will be a three lane thoroughfare in each direction for easy access to the public. It has been in "presales" for the past year, and they are going to break ground on the construction this coming August. Individuals can buy locales of 1,000 meters or more, and then they must follow strict guidelines and covenants when construction commences. In the presale phase of 2004 locales were being sold for $150 USD per square meter, and now just a year later they are being sold at $300 USD per square meter, and to date nearly 50% of locales are already sold. Plaza Las Americas, out of Cancun, has purchased a complete manzana, where they will be putting up high-end retail store fronts. There will be a 12 screen surround sound cinema, Chedraui, Fabricas de Francia, plus 80 smaller retail shops. In addition, the majority of car dealerships will be relocating to La Gran Plaza, a cultural center, library, museum, hospital, sports center, flea market, and metro station are going to be opened as well. There will be a large business and financial center as well, with some local government offices opening there. All in all, La Gran Plaza will be its own living and breathing economic mecca, and although some people resist change and growth in the area, there is no stopping it!

Okay, you know how it is, when living in Playa del Carmen, there are always some crazy rumors flying around about who may have been deported, where the heck the Wal-Mart is going, and whether or not Britney Spears was seen at Captain Dave's.
