Luna Blue Hotel and Garden in Playa del Carmen

Hands on management, and attention to detail makes this boutique hotel special.

How do a civil litigation lawyer, and business systems analyst, from San Francisco end up owning a small boutique hotel in Playa del Carmen? Well, as we all know everyone has quite a story on how and why they leave the comfort and familiarity of secure jobs, homes, and families, and Tony and Cheri Head, of Luna Blue Hotel and Garden are no different.

Luna Blue Hotel in Playa del Carmen Once people arrive in Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya there is a magnetic pull that brings them back over and over again, and when Tony and Cheri came on vacation here to Playa del Carmen 8 years ago, they fell in love with the people, attitude and lifestyle. A couple of years ago they were down here on vacation, relaxing on Mamitas Beach, when a young guy from Denver, Colorado struck up a conversation with them. He was one of 5 owners of a low budget; back packer friendly hotel in Playa del Carmen called The Zanzibar.  During this conversation they found out that The Zanzibar was for sale. Although they had talked about changing their life and lifestyle, and were sick of the rat race in the United States, they had zero experience in the hotel industry or management. Not intimidated by new experiences a light bulb went off in their heads, and they got excited about taking on such a challenge. After making an original offer on the hotel almost immediately, the deal almost fell through, but as fate would have it they arrived in February 2005 to sign all of the papers, and they were the proud and petrified owners, of a small hotel in Playa del Carmen.

They arrived with all of their worldly possessions in August of 2005, just after Hurricane Emily had hit, and were overwhelmed with the prospect of remodeling, renovating, and cleaning up from a major hurricane. Then of course our friend Wilma arrived in late October 2005 to really test the perseverance of these new business owners. They came through Hurricane Wilma with no major problems and continued to renovate and restore their little slice of paradise. The end result was amazing and the new and improved Luna Blue Hotel and Garden made its debut on December 18th, 2005 to a full house. With their hands on management style and their personalized service Tony and Cheri created a completely different feel then the previous hotel had, and Luna Blue has skyrocketed in popularity over the past year.
