Biostandard: An ecologically friendly company in Playa del Carmen I grew up in a very rural part of Northern California, so recycling was just part of our community and upbringing. My mom was so adamant about it that she would even iron, and reuse wrapping paper! This being said, one of the most difficult things for me when I moved to Mexico, was the lack of education and the incredible amount of waste that is left in the jungles and on the shores of our beaches. You will rarely see aluminum cans or glass bottles thrown by the side of the road, because they can be returned and recycled. However, the amount of plastic that is used and thrown away is mind boggling. The beaches are strewn with plastic bottles, straws, and six pack rings, and I always find myself with an armful of plastic as I leave the beach. So can we remedy this problem? I certainly think we can. Education is a key part of it, and I know some schools are starting to implement their own recycling education programs. That is a start for sure, but what else can we do? Enter Biostandard, a new ecologically friendly company here in Playa del Carmen. Anna Garcia is originally from Mexico City, and has been in Playa del Carmen for the past 5 years. She came from a family who were ecologically aware of the impact we can have on our planet. So in turn they educated their daughter to practice the same awareness. When she arrived in Playa del Carmen she knew that she wanted to start a different kind of company that incorporated recycling, reducing, and reusing, and she started Biostandard just last year. At this point Biostandard sells recycled biodegradable plastic products, such as plates, forks, spoon, and to-go containers to some area businesses. Xcaret, Dolphin Discovery, and some smaller hotels and restaurants have become clients, and Anna hopes to continue to grow her client base. They are also offering biodegradable household cleaners and supplies so maybe one day we can stop using Fabuloso!
In addition Biostandard has a fledgling plastic recycling program located in Nicte –Ha, and soon they hope to have a larger program and processing plant in Playa del Carmen. Biostandard is also involved in developing an eco-house located in the Compestre that they are going to use as a showcase example for other single family homes and developments. The sky is the limit for this young company with a passionate crew behind it, a great concept, and support from the community, Biostandard stands to be a groundbreaking concept in the development of the Rivera Maya. For more information, or to find out how you can get involved visit www.biostandard.com.mx or call 984-267-2823. Take part in making our community a better place! Comments (1)
