If you’re living or visiting Mexico there are always challenges. One is finding those creature comforts of home, whether they be luxury items or necessities. Things like red liquorice, size 15 shoes or English books! In the quest for English books you can find a few scattered here and there. They’re usually your general “beach trash” left behind by tourists at hotels; faded, tattered and bloated to twice their size from too many days on the beach. If you’re truly looking for some good reading material while in the Mayan Riviera, head to Puerto Morelos and Alma Libre Bookstore ...............
Alma Libre Bookstore changed owners 3 years ago when Robert & Joanne Birce, a couple from Calgary, Alberta, Canada took it over. In search of a simpler, quiet lifestyle the couple left their jobs in the media to enjoy the pleasures of living in Mexico, working for themselves and beautiful weather. Rob’s goal was to never see snow again (which he hasn’t) and Joanne’s was never to have to wear nylon stockings again.
Alma Libre Bookstore is open Tuesday to Saturday 10-3 & 6-9, Sunday 4-9. They are closed Monday. For more information: check out their website at http://www.almalibrebooks.com/. Now you’ll never be forced to read a bloated beach book again. Comments (0)

Puerto Morelos is just 20 minutes north of Playa del Carmen. Located on the main town square Alma Libre is now in its 8th year, carrying over 20,000 new and used English books. It’s the largest bookstore of its kind east of Mexico City. And it has very reasonable prices. Paperbacks sell for only $35 or $40 pesos. Plus you can trade in your books for different ones (no bloated beach books please).
Since taking over Alma Libre they have expanded their selection and have brought in a large number of new books as well. Besides a great selection of fiction, sci-fi and mystery they focus on Mayan culture, the area’s nature, maps, guide books and books to help you learn Spanish. They have a good selection of new age, yoga, Zen, Buddhism and meditation; also hard-to-find cookbooks, gardening books, classics and even a small philosophy section. Plus they carry some books in Espanol and German.
