Kyra in Playa del Carmen Submitted by Tammy Spowart

Hi Animal Lovers

Bobby-dog and I were walking on Fifth avenue last Friday night and he found a dog. She was curled up in a ball, trying to hide in a bit of grass on the side of the road. I quickly ran Bobby home and came back armed with chicken, water, a collar and leash. It was dark and all I could tell was that she wouldn't or couldn't move and had a nasty apple-sized open wound on her hip as well as a couple of smaller ones on her legs. I couldn't touch her, not even her head. I didn't know whether she was badly injured or 'just' scared. She ate all of the chicken and drank tons of water. I thought she had been hit by a car and might have broken bones. Realizing that I couldn't move her alone, I sent out a text for help that Christine and Andy answered.

We got her to her feet and realized that we had a very badly starved and terrified, but not 'broken' dog on our hands. She's at Diego the vet's now.

The best we can figure is that she has been kept trapped somewhere, possibly a cage that was too small so that she was forced to lie down, rather than stand. Her wounds are essentially bed sores. She has also been starved, either deliberately or through ignorance. (As the Playa locals know, the street dogs can find food, are never this skinny.)  When we found her she weighed approximately 22 pounds (10 kilos). She should weigh about double this. She's already put on a few kilos in the attached pictures.

She has ehrlichiosis ( a tick-borne blood disease, fatal if left untreated, but treatable). She's severely anemic. Diego explained that a normal blood count range is between 30 & 50. Hers is 0.24!! At 0.10,  blood transfusions are recommended. In short, she is lucky to be alive. She also tested heartworm positive. This used to be a chronic condition, but there's a relatively new treatment which takes 2 months and about $200 dollars but will cure her.

All told, to get her healthy will cost around $300 to $400. Eventually she'll need all of her shots and to be spayed. Her total medical bills will be in the $600 to $700 range.  LOOKING FOR $ DONATIONS!! Any amount would be appreciated. I have a paypal account using this email.

SHE NEEDS A HOME: If you've skipped ahead to the photos, you already know. Kyra is a pitbull. She's about 7 months old. She is still very shy but Christine and I have gone to visit and she's improving, slowly. She breaks my heart with every brave wag of her tail. Right now she is in love with Diego and his staff and prefers her cage at the vets to being outside, but we're working on building her sense of security and self-confidence.

She needs a home with someone who will be gentle and patient with her. She needs a home with someone who either has a permanent home in Playa or someone who will take her back to the their home and not expect to travel with her, not by plane anyway. You see, even if I wanted to take her, I couldn't. Many airlines, including the only two that I can use to take Bobby and I back to Montreal (Air Canada & Air Transat) have banned pitbulls, without exception. At this point not all North American carriers have a ban, but I imagine that it's only a matter of time before they follow suit.

I have no doubt that Kyra will grow up to be a lovely dog. Pitbulls want more than anything to please their masters. I have faith in her.

Together we can give her back her faith in people.
